The estimation of stature with metacarpals length in a mestizo Colombian sample: a pilot study

Abstract

Forensic anthropology labs in Colombia receive a large number of complex cases on a daily basis. The skeleral remains found are usually incomplete or highly degraded. In these cases the anthropologist has to use unusual or alternative merhodologies of forensic analysis. This pilot srudy evaluares how useful and reliable is stature estimation based on metacarpals for the forensic analysis of complex cases.

The five right and lefr metacarpals were measured in a sample of positively identified male and female individuals drawn from the Colombian Modern Skeletal Collection (n=94). The average of age at dearh was 45 years old and rhe forensic stature of the sample individuals was known. The inter-articular length (IAL) of the five bone structures was taken. Pearson's correlarion rates were determined and compared to determine which bone structures were more appropriate to estimare stature in the Colombian population.

Simple regression equations were developed for stature estimation on the basis of each one of the five metacarpals. Correlation coefficients and standard error of estimare for each of the genera red formulae were satisfactory and were very similar to those reported in the literature. The results show rhat the estimarion of stature with metacarpal measurements is a reliable tool of forensic analysis. However it is necessary to use a larger reference sample to develop new formulae and to validare them in a different control sample.
