Abstract

The detection of gunshot residue on hands permits the establishment of guilt or innocence of an individual related to a punishable act. The analytical method for gunshot residue detected on hands depends on the accomplished technique during the collection of the sample. In Colombia, only the inorganic components of gunshot residue are analyzed. The identification of organic residues such as traces of explosive substances provides more specific evidence of gunshot residue than the metallic content alone. The possibility of contamination of two different types of analytes (organic and inorganic components of gunshot residues) at the same time is less frequent and less probable, except in environments that involve the use of firearms. The present study uses an alternative method for the collection of gunshot residue (GSR). The collection method is independent from the analytical method and provides more specific evidence. The analysis of inorganic residues from the primer and organic residues from the powder was accomplished with the bullets for revolvers and pistols. The distribution of gunshot residue on hands was determined for both firearms. The use of polyvinyl alcohol as an alternate for collection of GSR was compared for each method of analysis, where 48 samples were used. The results demonstrated that polyvinyl alcohol may be applied during the collection process of GSR on hands for GC-MS, ICP-MS and/or SEM-EDX analysis.
